The minister toured the centre, took time out to greet the health workers and also welcome the international Doctor who are volunteering there under the umbrella of the doctors without borders.... We pray before every operation, say suspected robbers
Four members of a robbery gang who were arrested by the Lagos State Police Command have said they usually prayed to God before any operation.
One of the suspected robbers, Mutalubi Abdullahi, explained that the prayer was to ensure that only 'sinners' would be dealt with by the gang, while the 'innocent' would be spared.
Abdullahi, who was arrested along with Ismaila Moruf, Opeyemi Akinyemi and Sarah Emmanuel, were arrested by the operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the command, for robbing early morning pedestrians and motorists in the Mile 2 area of the state.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the gang, which operated on commercial motorcycles otherwise called okada, made use of three locally-made guns in their operations.
According to the police, the female member of the gang, Emmanuel, allegedly supplied two of the three guns. It was gathered that two of the guns had, however, been recovered by the police.
The police said the suspected robbers, who were arrested from their respective hideouts in Iyana Iyesi, Sango Ota, Ogun State, also operated in the Agege, Isolo and Oshodi areas.
It was gathered that the mode of operation of the gang was to attack unsuspecting motorists and pedestrians on the expressway early in the morning and during traffic hitches.
But 29-year-old Abdullahi from Igbeti, Oyo State, said he and other members of the gang were driven into robbery by poverty. He said they were careful to rob only those who deserved to be robbed.
He said, "That is why we usually prayed to God before embarking on any operation. The prayer was for God to protect us and to bring only sinners our way so that those who were innocent would be spared.
"I was formerly working as a panel beater in Oyingbo, Lagos State. I started robbing just last year. I have gone on robbery operations about 10 times.
"The gang has three guns. We only use the guns to frighten people. Mile 2 Expressway, Alapere and Oshodi are areas where we operated. The money I made from panel beating and okada riding was not sufficient. That was why I took to robbery."
Thirty-year-old Akinyemi, who was an also an okada rider before joining the gang, said he made about N25,000 from each robbery operation.
He said, "I was an okada rider, but when I had an accident with the okada, I stopped the business. I made about N25,000 each from about four operations I went with the gang. Our style was to attack people during traffic jams. My wife did not know I was a member of a robbery gang. It is true that we prayed before our operations, asking for protection as we went out."
Moruf, 30 from Epe, Lagos, said he was lured into the gang after his job as a roadside mechanic did not bring sufficient income.
The only female in the gang, 31-year-old Emmanuel, who allegedly supplied them with guns, said her friend, Modinat, convinced her to buy the guns for the gang.
She added that apart from getting guns for the gang, she had not gone for any operation.
She said, "I was working as a hairdresser. It was one of my friends, Modinat, who called me and said the gang needed a gun. Modinat was a girlfriend to one of them. She then asked me to come with her and I did. We got the two guns for N25,000 at Idi Iroko from some mechanics. That was in February. I know I am guilty."
Our correspondent learnt that the gang was arrested, after several complaints had reached the former commissioner of police, AIG Umar Manko, about robberies in the area.
It was gathered that Manko had then directed SARS Commander, SP Abba Kyari, to go after the robbers.
A police source at the command said investigations into the matter were ongoing.

Update: Unreponsive U.S plane in Cuban airspace crashes near Jamaica
CNN reports that two fighter jets trailed the plane, which is a Socata TBM-700 light business and utility aircraft, but stopped when it crossed over into Cuban territory.
Spokesman for the North American Aerospace Defense Command said the plane's windows were frosted and it is unclear how much fuel is left. The plane is said to have been flying unresponsive for some time.
NORAD has reached out to Cuban authorities and now Cuban fighter jets are trailing the small plane which took off from NY about five hours ago. Cuba is currently not looking at the plane as a threat.

DONETSK, September 05. /ITAR-TASS/. Combat operations in Donetsk, Luhansk self-proclaimed republics have been suspended for now, a high-ranking source from the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) told ITAR-TASS on Friday.
"There have been no reports about military hostilities in the DPR and LPR over the past 15 minutes. The sides stopped shooting," the source said, adding the military commanders were waiting for the outcome of the Contact Group's meeting in Minsk. "It remains to be seen what happens next," the DPR source said.

The men were travelling in a convoy that included an armoured personnel carrier and two machine gunners mounted on pick-up trucks.
Sky News has filmed well-armed, well-equipped troops, who appear to be wearing recent issue Russian combat gear, operating alongside rebel forces in south-eastern Ukraine.
The men were travelling in a small convoy, which included an armoured personnel carrier and two machine gunners mounted on pick-up trucks.
The vehicles were marked with the white painted circles that signal allegiance to the separatists, but all other insignia and number plates had been removed.
We saw them being waved through a rebel-controlled checkpoint outside the town of Novoazovsk as one of the guards said: "These are ours."
Russian military expert Mark Galeotti examined the Sky News images and noted the white ribbons on the lead jeep and white armbands, which he said Russian security forces often use to distinguish their men.

Mr. Jacobs was a fast walker. He always seemed to be in a hurry. He walked up to the house and disappeared through the front door. The boys took to their heels and ran to their hostel. "We Will divide it amongst ourselves, the four of us," Sule said. "Why? It was Tanko and T that had the idea of going for the milk. You and the village head chiefs son only met us on our way and you boys only escorted us so, both of you are not part of it," Bawa said. "Are you saying they will not get from the milk? That is being greedy," Tanko said. "No, it's not being greedy, it is only not being foolish," Bawa argued. "How can people who did not plant or know anything about sowing now want to have a share of the harvest? This is what my father will call cheating." "Your father is a cheat," Sule said. Really?! FG denies hiring Stephen Davis as Boko Haram negotiator
Speaking through the Coordinator of the National Information Center, Mr Mike Omeri, today Sept. 5th in Abuja, FG said the decision to hire a negotiator would be made public whenever they decide to do so and that they have no plans to question those alleged to be Boko Haram sponsors by Stephen Davis
"For now nobody has been hired by the government to negotiate on its behalf with Boko Haram. Anytime the government decides to do so, it will make it known to the public. The government is still investigating the allegations made by the alleged negotiator. However, the government has no plan to question anybody because of those allegations made by the Australian," Omeiri stated.
