When the wraps came off the J-31 stealth fighter at the Zhuhai air show yesterday, there was double cause for celebration for the People's Liberation Army Air Force. It not only marked the public debut of the country's the fifth-generation stealth fighter, it represented the progress China has made in the 65 years since its air force first got off the ground.

The J-31 is just one of a series of fighter jets to roll off mainland military production lines in recent years. Despite the advances there remains one gaping hole in China's winged military industrial complex - one that could stop it from realising the next mission set for it by the highest echelons of power.

Nationalist Youths Attack U.S. Sailors in Turkey -- New York Times

ISTANBUL — Members of a Turkish nationalist youth group assaulted three visiting American sailors in Istanbul on Wednesday, hurling balloons filled with red paint at them, putting white sacks over their heads and calling them murderers.

The Turkish authorities later arrested 12 people in connection with the assault, which the American Embassy in Ankara described as "appalling."

A video posted online by the group, the Turkish Youth Union, or T.G.B., shows a dozen of its members staging an anti-American protest in the touristy Eminonu neighborhood and attacking the sailors, who were not in uniform, in broad daylight.

The sailors had just disembarked from the guided missile destroyer Ross, docked in Istanbul for a few days. They escaped and returned to the ship, and all shore leave for the crew was canceled.

     Despite having enough money to throw arou for adverts, the Cable News Network (CNN), has made it known that it will not air any political advert from the country! This is surprising, as several politicians from the country, are willing to pay the heavy fees (as much as 5 Million Naira for a 30 second advert at prime time), involved to ensure that their campaign jingles for the 2015 elections are carried on the Network.

"We approached CNN agents in Nigeria to place some adverts for our principal. We sent the creatives to them as requested and they returned them, saying they do not run commercials that are intended to campaign for votes. We could not believe it," a consultant to a presidential told Cable Nigeria

Another, who is working for a state governor seeking re-election, said he had a similar experience.

But an official of CNN said that it was a general rule not to accept certain advertisements and there was no discrimination against Nigerian politicians.

Ashley Hogan-Gancarz, the account manager of CNN International, added that:

"CNN International never accept political or religious advertising. This is due to Ofcom regulations.

"If you want to promote investment opportunities, etc. that would be fine but nothing to do with politics or the 2015 election."

Ofcom is the regulator of the broadcast industry in the UK, from where CNN International oversees its African operations.

CNN's rejection of 2015-related adverts is expected to benefit local media in Nigeria. Part of the advertising budget is now expected to be spent locally.
