75 year old Woman gets life term for killing husband

A judge in Wyoming sentenced a 75-year-old Missouri woman to life in prison on Monday for killing her husband with a rifle in the mid-1970s and throwing his body down the shaft of an abandoned gold mine, where it remained for nearly 40 years.

Defendant Alice Uden wore wire glasses, a court-supplied hearing aid and a blue suit, and sat quietly in her wheelchair before speaking at the hearing.

She sobbed gently as she addressed the court about the death of her third husband, Ronald Holtz, then 25.

"I've tried to atone for it," Uden said. "I wish that I never would have met him so that none of this ever would have happened. He was a very frightening man."

Jurors in Cheyenne didn't buy Uden's argument that she shot Holtz in the head to defend her toddler daughter from him. In May, they found her guilty of second-degree murder.

Uden killed Holtz in late 1974 or early 1975 in Cheyenne, where he was living with her and her 2-year-old daughter. Uden testified that she shot him with a rifle after he flew into a rage over the girl's crying and was inches away from attacking her in bed.

Laramie County District Court Judge Steven Sharpe said he considered possible mitigating factors, including Uden's lack of prior criminal history.

"This was very much a cold, calculated murder," Sharpe said. "The jury heard all of the evidence that was before the court and the jury rejected the defense that it was self-defense."

District Attorney Scott Homar argued the killing was a thoughtful, deliberate act that rid Uden of Holtz.

"Her way out was to take Mr. Holtz's life while he was sleeping and then dispose of it in a way that it wouldn't be found for 39 1/2 years," Homar said.

Police arrested Uden and her fourth and current husband, Gerald Uden, 72, both of Chadwick, Missouri, last fall in southwest Missouri, accusing them of killing former spouses in separate attacks.

Gerald Uden has pleaded guilty to killing his ex-wife and her two sons in central Wyoming in 1980. Prosecutors have not drawn any link between the two cases.

At her trial, Alice Uden testified that she removed Christmas decorations from a large cardboard barrel and put Holtz's body inside. She wrestled the barrel into her trunk, she said, and dumped the barrel in an abandoned gold mine on a ranch between Cheyenne and Laramie.

One of Uden's sons, Todd Scott, testified at the trial that his mother told him decades ago that she had shot Holtz while he was asleep.

After previous, unsuccessful attempts to find Holtz's remains in the mine filled with the carcasses of cattle and other ranch animals, investigators last summer dug deeper in the vertical shaft and finally excavated Holtz's remains.

The jury declined to find Uden guilty of premeditated, first-degree murder, which would have carried a mandatory life sentence. The jury also declined to convict her of a less-serious charge of manslaughter.

Uden's attorney, Donald Miller, urged the judge to sentence Uden to probation because the now-grown daughter, Erica Prunty, has cancer and has been given six months to live.

He also highlighted the psychiatric history of Holtz, who met Uden, a former nurse, while she was working in the psychiatric unit at a Veterans Administration hospital in Sheridan.

"His behavior was unpredictable. He was irritable, he was hostile, he was explosive. He had no incentive to change," Miller told the courtroom.

Prosecutors in the case against Gerald Uden said the bodies of 32-year-old Virginia Uden, and her two sons, 11-year-old Richard Uden and 10-year-old Reagan Uden, have yet to be found.

Gerald Uden told a Fremont County courtroom in November that he shot each of them with a rifle not far from his home, one after the other, and dumped their bodies in an abandoned mine.

Months later, he said, he retrieved the bodies and sank them in Fremont Lake in western Wyoming. Investigators briefly searched the deep lake for the bodies and say they plan a more comprehensive search soon.

Jurors at Alice Uden's trial were prohibited from hearing about Gerald Uden's case.

The Japanese government has offered to release an anti-influenza drug called Favipiravir, which they claim they developed for the treatment of new and re-emerging viral diseases, including Ebola. They say the drug can treat Ebola and other influenza viral diseases. Continue...

Announcing the offer to newsmen yesterday August 25th in Tokyo, the Chief Cabinet Secretary of the Japanese government, Yoshihide Suga said the Japanese government is waiting for the World Health Organization to request for the drug and it will be dispatched immediately. Spokesperson of Fujifilm, the company that developed the drug, Takao Aoki, said they have more than enough of the drug to cater for over 20,000 patients and are in talks with the US Food and Drug Administration for clinical testing of the drug

Mariah Carey, Nick Cannon -- Absence Makes the Heart Fonder ... But Not That Fond

EXCLUSIVE

Mariah Carey
and Nick Cannon are actually getting along -- way better than when they were together and loathed each other -- but TMZ has learned there is NO chance of a reconciliation.

TMZ first reported ... the divorce is a "done deal" and the couple has been separated since May.

We're told they are not only on good terms -- primarily for the sake of their kids -- they even went to dinner Friday in Tribeca and shockingly no one even noticed.

It's a big improvement from 6 months ago, when there was so much contempt they literally could not be in the same room together.

We're told it's all about the kids ... they're both committed to making the divorce as easy as possible on them. But -- let's just say one side tells us -- they will NEVER get back together.

Before Tribalism Destroys Akwa Ibom State!

Before Tribalism Destroys Akwa Ibom State!
Before Tribalism Destroys Akwa Ibom State!

We are approaching another election year in Akwa Ibom State and the gladiators are up in arms against one another. Nobody is talking about competence and credibility. Nobody is talking about health care, job creation, security, infrastructures and the real issues of governance.

What matters to us is ethnicity and tribalism. In Akwa Ibom State today, the situation is so precarious such that one begins to wonder if things will ever change. The debate is not about who can do the job, the debate is centered on which senatorial district and tribe should produce the next governor.

The governor is leading the divisive campaign in the name of a useless and unproductive zoning arrangement. But the truth is that he is actually zoning to Udom Emmanuel, his anointed successor.

Godswill Akpabio says he wants his successor to come from the Eket Senatorial District of the State which has never produced a governor because that will ensure equity. What insult on our collective sanity. If zoning is so real and good; why is he pursuing a senatorial ambition knowing fully well that it should go to the Abak Federal Constituency in his senatorial district which has never produced a senator? Hypocrite.

These people have succeeded in pitching one tribe against another. Our people are no longer brothers and sisters. The average Annang person today sees Akpabio's government as their turn to rule. You rarely find someone from the governor's tribe speaking against the atrocities of his administration. They are united in support of "their son".

The Oro tribe is talking tough, threatening everyone that their time has come and that they should be given the opportunity to rule the state. They are complaining of developmental marginalization, which I support having been there. It is as if the Oro enclave is no longer part of the state.

The Ibibios, being the largest tribe, feel they have been relegated by Akpabio and that they must return to power by fire by force. They think it is their birth right to rule the state. Nonsense.

Before Tribalism Destroys Akwa Ibom State!
When you see someone from Ibibio or Oro supporting Godswill Akpabio, it is most likely that the person is a beneficiary of the system. Akpabio himself has never been a statesman, he is incurably tribalistic. Go to his village Ukana in Essien Udim Local Government Area, and you will see what I am talking about. The notorious 'Ukana Mafia' is so dreaded and feared by all. He has taken important institutions and cited many projects there without regard to other areas.

The tension is mounting by day, it is becoming too delicate for one to remain silent. Nobody knows what will trigger the looming implosion. We should not out of fear of being haunted, victimised or even killed close our eyes to what is unfolding in our dear state.
Before Tribalism Destroys Akwa Ibom State!

Former governor Obong Victor Attah had his flaws, but he was not and has never been a tribalist. I heard recently that the stooge Akpabio is fighting hard to foist on the people of the state, the Secretary to the State Government, has started his own favouritism by giving preferences to people from his local government area in recruitment.

I challenge Akpabio to publish the full names and local government of all those employed into the state civil and public service since he assumed office in 2007. There are certain things I cannot say publicly.
Before Tribalism Destroys Akwa Ibom State!
While this mad battle of tribes is going on, the man on the street is suffering and smiling in the mist of plenty. Our people have never been this divided. We forget that poverty does not know Ibibio, Annang or Oro or even Ekid or Ibeno.
Whenever I raise this issue, some will say but the governor has appointed people from other tribes into his government. This is an absurd defence. Who are these people and whose interest are they representing? The governor has sycophants and yes me across tribes. These people are representing their selfish interest and that of the governor especially when the going is good.

Take for example Obong Bassey Albert, popularly called OBA, the immediate past commissioner for finance who was recently sacked by Akpabio for nursing a gubernatorial ambition. While in government, OBA defended Akpabio with all his might. But today, he is seeking to succeed Akpabio and is talking nonsense, accusing Akpabio of marginalizing the Ibibios. What insolence! The same with Obong Umana Okon Umana, the immediate past Secretary to the State Government.

Some folks will say that I critise Akpabio because I am Ibibio. This is because to them, tribe and personal interest determines where one stands and they cannot imagine someone thinking and acting differently. But that is a blatant lie.

There is no tribalism in me. During the 2011 elections, I mobilised the youths of my community against the member currently representing my state constituency in the State House of Assembly. I also rejected monetary offer from the member's son. She is from my village. Most of those I have supported at elections even while in the university where not of my stock or tribe. Despite coming from the South South, I am today a vociferous anti-Jonathan campaigner because I do not see in him a responsible leader. I am anti-zoning, from councillorship to the presidency. Let the best person get it.
Before Tribalism Destroys Akwa Ibom State!
We have to stop this Ibibio, Annang and Oro nonsense. We are one people. Akpabio should allow the people to choose their governor. The masses need to realise the deceits of the ruling elites. How come that they only remember and talk about tribe when they are fighting for political office? How come they are blind to tribe when stealing and sharing our money. They know that as long as the people continue to see things from the tribal perspective they will never be held to account. We have had enough.
