Criticized for lavishness, Ak Saray may make it to Guinness records

Ak Saray, or White Palace in English, where President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will move on Oct. 29 from Çankaya Palace as his new presidential building in the capital city, lacks ostentation or motifs from characteristic Turkish traditional architecture, but is one of the largest palaces in the world.

Constructed inside the Atatürk Forest Farm (AOÇ) on an area of 300,000 square meters, Ak Saray may even be touted as the world's largest residential palace, as Guinness World Records currently lists Istana Nurul Iman of the Sultan of Brunei, in the capital Bandar Seri Begawan, as the world's largest residential palace despite the fact that it has 200,000 square meters of floor space. Completed in 1984, the Brunei sultan's palace cost 300 million pounds sterling, which is equivalent to $422 million at the time or $970 million today.

Although there is no official statement regarding the cost of Ak Saray, experts estimate that Erdoğan's new headquarters has probably cost about TL 1 billion ($444 million). He will move in on the anniversary of the foundation of the Turkish Republic.

Ak Saray has been at the center of heated debates as Erdoğan has simply ignored a number of court orders to halt construction immediately. Even after a court ruling in March of this year, Erdoğan said: "let them demolish it if they have enough power for this. They ordered stay of execution but they will not be able to stop it. I will open it and I will sit in it," Erdoğan told reporters back in March, when he was still the prime minister.

The palace was initially begun as the grounds for the Office of the Prime Ministry. But after Erdoğan won the elections in August, becoming Turkey's 12th president, he decided to use the building, which he had ordered in the first place, as the Presidential Palace. The fate of Çankaya Palace, which served as the residence and primary office for presidents since the time of Atatürk, the founder of the republic, has yet to be decided. There are rumors that it will be converted into a museum.

The World's Largest Palace title is assumed by a number of countries because different standards are used to gauge the size of the buildings. Guinness World Records stated that only the combined area of indoor floors counts in determining the winner. From this perspective, Ak Saray has a chance. However, Guinness suggests another condition: A palace must have been intended for use as a royal residence. This obligation hampers Ak Saray's chance to make it to the record book, since Erdoğan is not officially a sultan.

Serving Austrian sovereigns for about sixe centuries, Hofburg Palace in Vienna has 240,000 square-meter floor area. The Louvre, the royal residence of French kings for nearly 300 years, is also small in comparison to Erdoğan's palace, as that building -- which serves as a museum at present -- has a floor area of only 210,000 square meters.

Seasoned journalist Yılmaz Özdil, who started writing for Sözcü daily this past week after being fired from the Hürriyet daily upon government pressure because of his critical views, wrote in his column several days ago about comparisons between the size of Ak Saray and other famous buildings. "The White House, [from] where Obama is ruling the world, is 55,000 square meters, with a tennis court, bowling alley, cinema, swimming pool and yard included," he said.

The Kremlin stands on a 25,000 square-meter floor area whereas the entire Red Square has a size of 73,000 square meters, he noted. Buckingham Palace, which contains 775 rooms and 78 bathrooms, is just 78,000 square meters and the entirety of Vatican City is built on 44,000 square meters of land, noted Özdil. Elysee is 11,000 square meters. Dolmabahçe Palace, which is labeled as a monument of extravagancy on the Bosporus, is 64,000 square meters, he added.

Özdil concluded his column by writing that Ak Saray is still not that big compared to what Erdoğan's ego requires.
